چکیده

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) is one of five instruments aboard the Terra Earth Observing System platform launched in December 1999. After achieving final orbit, MODIS began Earth observations in late February 2000 and has been acquiring data since that time. The instrument is also being flown on the Aqua spacecraft, launched in May 2002. A comprehensive set of remote sensing algorithms for cloud masking and the retrieval of cloud physical and optical properties have been developed by members of the MODIS atmosphere science team. The archived products from these algorithms have applications in climate change studies, climate modeling, numerical weather prediction, as well as fundamental atmospheric research. In addition to an extensive cloud mask, products include cloud-top properties (temperature, pressure, effective emissivity), cloud thermodynamic phase, cloud optical and microphysical parameters (optical thickness, effective particle radius, water path), as well as derived statistics. We will describe the various algorithms being used for the remote sensing of cloud properties from MODIS data with an emphasis on the pixel-level retrievals (referred to as Level-2 products), with 1 km or 5 km spatial resolution at nadir. An example of each Level-2 cloud product from a common data granule (5 minutes of data) off the coast of South America will be discussed. Future efforts will also be mentioned. Relevant points related to the global gridded statistics products (Level-3) are highlighted though additional details are given in an accompanying paper in this issue.

Comparison and validation of MODIS standard and new combination of Terra and Aqua snow cover products in northern Xinjiang, China

Taking northern Xinjiang, China, as an example, this study first compares the standard MODIS Terra and Aqua snow cover classifications, and then compares the accuracy of the standard MODIS daily and 8-day snow cover products with the new daily and multi-day snow cover combination of MODIS Terra and Aqua observations using in situ measurements. Under clear sky in both products, the agreement of ...

Development and assessment of combined Terra and Aqua snow cover products in Colorado Plateau, USA and northern Xinjiang, China

This study presents our methods to produce multi-day Terra, Aqua, and Terra-Aqua moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) snow cover composite images respectively from daily Terra MODIS, Aqua MODIS, and both Terra and Aqua MODIS snow cover products, with flexible starting and ending dates and a user-defined cloud cover threshold. The methods are applied to Colorado Plateau, USA and...

Evaluation of the MODIS C6 Aerosol Optical Depth Products over Chongqing, China

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Collection 6 (C6) aerosol optical depth (AOD) products from the 10/3 km Dark Target (DT) and Deep Blue (DB) algorithms are firstly evaluated using ground observed AODs by the sun photometer in Chongqing, a mountainous mega-city in southwest China. The validation results show that MODIS AODs from 10/3 km DT algorithm are comparable with t...

Development and Implementation of an Electronic Crosstalk Correction for Bands 27-30 in Terra MODIS Collection 6

The photovoltaic bands on the long-wave infrared focal plane assembly of Terra MODIS, bands 27–30, have suffered from steadily increasing contamination from electronic crosstalk as the mission has progressed. This contamination has a great impact on MODIS data products, including image striping and radiometric bias in the Level-1B calibrated radiance product, and incorrect retrieval in atmosphe...

Two MODIS Aerosol Products over Ocean on the Terra and Aqua CERES SSF Datasets

Understanding the impact of aerosols on the earth’s radiation budget and the long-term climate record requires consistent measurements of aerosol properties and radiative fluxes. The Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) Science Team combines satellite-based retrievals of aerosols, clouds, and radiative fluxes into Single Scanner Footprint (SSF) datasets from the Terra and Aqua s...
